“The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde

I had to read The Importance of Being Earnest for my high school lit class and oh my gosh do I love it.

Imp_of_being_ErnestThis play is all 100% nonsense, all of which was completely intentional of Oscar Wilde. Everything in this play is centered around being as ridiculous as possible.

The plot centers around a man named Jack who spends half of his time in the country and half of it in the city. In the country he goes by his real name: Jack, in the city he goes by a pseudo name, Ernest. When the two worlds unexpectedly collide, chaos and confusion naturally ensues.

The characters in this play are so much fun. Everyone is nonsensical but in the best way. Algernon and Cecily are two of my favorite characters in the story.

It’s a play about being earnest and being Ernest. It’s literally a play on words.

I definitely recommend this play to anyone who’s interested. It’s a fun and easy read (super short!), it’s funny, and you get the added benefit of feeling cultured for having read 19th century literature.
