“Mockingjay” by Suzanne Collins

This book has been out for some time, but I still find people who say they haven’t read the third and final book of The Hunger Games trilogy because they’ve heard such awful things about the book.

MockingjayMy question is why?!??! Unless the books don’t hold your interest and you really don’t care how it ends, I do not understand when people just stop in the middle of reading a series. Especially when that reason is based on others’ opinions.

I personally like Mockingjay. I agree that the first two were better (the first being the best, of course), but the story had to change to progress, and I think Collins did that in an appropriate way. I think some of the very last chapters were written lazily (she should have gone into detail about a crucial scene, and instead she simply summed it up after the fact).

Despite that, I think that what happens make sense and it was written well. Sometimes I’d get mad or upset at what would happen, but it’s a book about war and rebellion: it’s not going to be exactly what you want, and many sad and terrible things happen. Katniss would frustrate me sometimes, but she’s a frustrating character and what she does are the exact things that she would do; it’s true to her character.

“Fire is catching! And if we burn, you burn with us!”

I have loved The Hunger Games series since it first came out in 2008, and I think Mockingjay is worth the read if you’ve started the series. Don’t expect it to be better than the previous books, but that doesn’t make it a bad book at all! I definitely recommend finishing the series if you skipped Mockingjay. And I definitely recommend you start the series if you haven’t already. It’s never too late to start/finish an amazing book series.

  1. I agree with you, the first two books were written better! But it was worth the read to finish the series. Mockingjay captured my attention, but the ending was not as dramatic/ intriguing as I hoped! But I am glad I finished the series before seeing the movies in theater!
